Check Your Magazines Before Match Day

The EGW USPSA Magazine Gauge gives competitors, Range Officers, gunsmiths, and match staff a consistent way to check competition-magazine length. It measures both commonly referenced 140mm and 170mm magazine configurations, including the installed base pad.

Current USPSA rules identify the EGW mag gauge as the primary magazine-measuring device. Keeping one in your range bag or workshop lets you check your magazine and base-pad combinations before arriving at equipment inspection.

The Primary USPSA Magazine-Measuring Device USPSA Appendix E1 specifies the EGW mag gauge as the primary device for checking magazine length and gauge conformity.

Two Magazine-Length Limits in One Gauge

140mm Magazines 141.25mm / 5.561"

Checks magazine and base-pad combinations against the commonly referenced 140mm limit.

170mm Magazines 171.25mm / 6.742"

Checks extended magazine and base-pad combinations against the commonly referenced 170mm limit.

Why Use the EGW USPSA Mag Gauge?

  • Identified by USPSA rules as the primary magazine-measuring device
  • Checks both 141.25mm and 171.25mm magazine-length limits
  • Measures the complete magazine and installed base pad
  • CNC machined from 6061 aluminum
  • Black anodized finish
  • Useful for competitors, Range Officers, clubs, match staff, and gunsmiths
  • Compact enough to keep in a range bag or on a workbench

How to Check a Magazine

  1. Confirm that the magazine is unloaded.
  2. Select the appropriate 141.25mm or 171.25mm side of the gauge.
  3. Place the complete magazine and installed base pad into the gauge.
  4. Position the magazine so the back is flush against the gauge.
  5. Allow the magazine to rest in the gauge without significant force or compression.
  6. Confirm that the magazine conforms to the required length and gauge profile.
Important: Passing a pre-match check with this gauge does not guarantee that all equipment complies with every requirement of a USPSA division. Always review the current division rules. If a magazine measurement or procedure is questioned at a match, the Range Master has final authority.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are these called 140mm and 170mm magazines?

The terms 140mm and 170mm are commonly used names for these magazine configurations. The actual gauge limits are 141.25mm and 171.25mm.

Does the gauge measure magazine capacity?

No. This tool checks external magazine length and conformity. It does not determine capacity or verify every other requirement of a competition division.

Should I force a tight magazine into the gauge?

No. USPSA specifies that the magazine should be placed into the gauge without significant force or depression. Slight pressure may be used where permitted by the official measurement procedure.

Does passing the gauge guarantee that my magazine is legal?

No. The gauge helps verify magazine length before a match, but the magazine must still comply with the complete rules for the selected division. The Range Master has final authority when a measurement is questioned.
