Overview

The EGW 4 Caliber Auto Case Gauge Ammo Checker allows you to quickly verify ammunition and resized brass for four popular handgun cartridges: 9mm, .40 S&W/10mm, .45 ACP, and .38 Super. Whether you are a competitive shooter, recreational shooter, gunsmith, or dedicated reloader, this multi-caliber chamber checker helps identify potential ammunition issues before they cause problems at the range.

Our case gauges are machined from solid 6061-T6 aircraft-grade aluminum and finished with a durable matte black anodized coating. Each gauge is made to SAAMI minimum specification to help verify that your ammunition will fit within a minimum chamber dimension.

While some companies use boring bars to make chamber checkers, EGW uses the actual Clymer reamers that are used to chamber barrels. This gives reloaders and shooters a practical way to check ammunition fit before loading magazines, packing ammo for a match, or heading to the range.

Checking Case Length

Auto pistol cartridges headspace on the case mouth and not the case rim as revolver cartridges do. To make certain your cases are not too long, follow the steps below:

  1. Resize and deprime the case.
  2. Drop the case inside the correct hole in the case gauge.
  3. If the case is flush with the top of the gauge, the case does not need trimming.
  4. If the case protrudes above the gauge, trimming may be required.

Checking Proper Bullet Seating Depth

  1. Install the bullet into a correct length case and drop it into the gauge.
  2. If the case is flush with the top of the gauge, the seating depth is correct for that bullet shape, style, length, and weight.
  3. If the case protrudes slightly, remove the cartridge and seat the bullet slightly deeper into the case, then check it again.
  4. With the cartridge still in the gauge, hold it in place with your finger and turn the gauge over.
  5. The tip of the bullet should not protrude beyond the bottom of the gauge.
  6. If the case has been properly resized, the length is correct, and the bullet is seated properly, the cartridge should fall out of the gauge by gravity alone.

Important Reloading Notes

We have found our gauges extremely helpful when reloading ammunition. The information above is general reloading guidance and is not caliber specific. Always consult your reloading manual and follow safe reloading practices.
