The standard recoil spring weight varies by the 1911's slide length and chambered caliber. For the most common configuration, a .45 ACP 5" Government Model, the factory standard is 16 lbs. For a 4.25" Commander in .45 ACP, the factory standard is 18 lbs. Lighter calibers like 9mm use lighter tracking springs, while high-pressure calibers like 10mm Auto require heavier configurations.
The goal is to match the tracking spring directly to your power factor. A properly weighted spring will have your empty brass ejecting consistently between 8 and 12 feet away from your stance.
Use lighter springs for light target loads and heavier springs for full-power +P or high-pressure defensive calibers.
